Claudia Wells: “La Delorean? La userei per viaggiare nel passato!”

INTERVISTA ESCLUSIVA A CLAUDIA WELLS, LA “JENNIFER” DI RITORNO AL FUTURO

Claudia Wells è oggi una donna piena di energie, un’imprenditrice di successo, un’amante della vita. Nel 1985 è stata invece Jennifer, la fidanzata di Marty McFly (interpretato dallo straordinario Michael J. Fox) in Ritorno al Futuro, una delle pellicole più famose della storia del cinema. L’abbiamo contattata al suo negozio di abbigliamento maschile Armani Wells che si trova a Studio City, in California.

L’intervista in videochiamata ci permette di apprezzarne l’immutato fascino, ma anche la semplicità e la sensibilità.

Cosa ha significato per te interpretare il ruolo di Jennifer Parker?

“È stato certamente il lavoro che ha segnato maggiormente la mia carriera di attrice. Avevo recitato in diverse altre produzioni, ma partecipare a Ritorno al Futuro mi ha senza dubbio resa famosa in tutto il mondo. A distanza di più di trent’anni, per molti sono ancora Jennifer Parker!”.

Come ti sei trovata nei panni della fidanzata di Marty McFly?

“Benissimo! Devo ammettere che è stato abbastanza semplice interpretare quel ruolo perché io ero esattamente come Jennifer, in pratica non ho dovuto recitare, è bastato essere me stessa. Forse anche per questo il risultato è stato così buono”.

Nel secondo e nel terzo film della saga il ruolo di Jennifer Parker è stato affidato a Elisabeth Shue.

“Quando fui contattata per il primo sequel, mia madre aveva scoperto da poco di essere malata di cancro. Non ebbi alcun dubbio nel decidere di restarle accanto. Accettare avrebbe significato abbandonarla, non fui mai un’opzione per me”.

Questo dimostra la bella persona che sei.

“Grazie…”. A questo punto gli occhi di Claudia si fanno lucidi, prova a controllare l’emozione con un sorriso timido, delicato, bellissimo.

Hai conosciuto Elisabeth Shue?

“Purtroppo non c’è mai stata l’occasione, ma ne sarei felicissima. In fondo siamo state la stessa persona per un po’!”.

In Ritorno al Futuro appaiono diversi oggetti che nell’anno in cui è stato girato, il 1985, erano solo invenzioni cinematografiche. Alcuni oggi esistono davvero.

“Sì, è incredibile. Non lo avremmo mai pensato. La videochiamata, come stiamo facendo noi due adesso, le porte che si aprono con l’impronta digitale, la televisione multicanale, il crowdfunding elettronico e tante altre cose. Chissà fra trent’anni cosa ci sarà!”.

Se oggi avessi a disposizione la Delorean di Doc dove e soprattutto quando andresti?

“Su questo non ho dubbi. Posso dare due risposte?”.

Permesso accordato.

“Mi piacerebbe tornare indietro nel tempo per conoscere i miei genitori da giovani. Per vedere come vivevano, cosa amavano, quali idee sostenevano”.

E poi?

“Vorrei tanto poter assistere alla nascita di Gesù”.

Hai scelto due destinazioni temporali del passato. Nessuna curiosità sul futuro?

“Credo che il bello del futuro sia che non lo conosciamo. Dobbiamo costruirlo, scoprirlo, ogni giorno. Non vorrei mai sapere in anticipo cosa accadrà domani”.

Da più di vent’anni hai un negozio di abbigliamento maschile, come vanno gli affari?

“Molto bene, apro solo su appuntamento e mi metto a completa disposizione dei clienti. Offro loro una selezione accurata di vestiti e se vogliono anche dei consigli. Amo il mio lavoro!”.

E noi amiamo lei. La salutiamo strappandole la promessa di inviarci una foto con dedica.

Dieci giorni dopo, nella cassetta della posta c’è una busta. Arriva dall’Universal Mail and Business Center di Studio City, Usa.

Mentre l’apriamo emozionati sapendo cosa troveremo, ci viene in mente la lettera che Marty scrive a Doc nel 1955 per avvisarlo dell’attentato mortale messo in atto nei suoi confronti dai terroristi libici trent’anni dopo. Poi torniamo al presente, che a pensarci bene potrebbe essere anche il passato o il futuro. E ci scappa un sorriso.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH CLAUDIA WELLS, “JENNIFER” FROM BACK TO THE FUTURE

Claudia Wells is now an energetic woman, a successful entrepreneur, a lover of life. In 1985 she played the character of Jennifer, the fiancée of Marty McFly’s (played by the extraordinary Michael J. Fox) in Back to the future, which is among one of most famous films of the history of cinema. We have got in touch with her in at Armani Wells, the men’s clothing store she owns in Studio City, California.

The video-interview has allowed us to greatly appreciate her charm which is unchanged, but also her simplicity and sensitivity.

What has playing Jennifer Parker meant to you?

“For sure it has been the role that has most determined my career as an actress. I had played in several other productions but Back to the future has undoubtedly made me popular on a global level. More than 30 years have gone by, but for many I am still Jennifer Parker!”

How did you like playing the fiancée of Marty McFly?

“It was awesome! I must admit that playing that role proved pretty easy, because I actually was like Jennifer: basically, I did not really need to act, I was just myself. Maybe this is the reason the result turned out so good”.

In the second and third film of the series the role of Jennifer Parker was given to Elisabeth Shue.

“When I got contacted for the first sequel my mother had just discover she had cancer. I had no doubt that the right thing to do was to be by her side. Accepting the role would have felt like abandoning her, so it was never really an option for me”.

This shows the amazing person you are.

“Thank you…”. Claudia’s eyes turn shiny, and she tries to keep her emotions under control with a shy, delicate beautiful smile.

Did you have the chance to meet Elisabeth Shue?

“Unfortunately, I never had the chance, but I would have loved to. After all, we have been the same person for some time!”

In Back to the future, we can see a lot of objects that were just film inventions in the year the film was shot, in 1985. Some of these actually exist now.

“Yes, it is incredible, we would have never imagined this. Videocalls, like the one we are on now, doors that can be opened by use of a fingerprint, multi-channel TVs, digital crowdfunding and so many other things. Who knows what the next 30 years will bring!”.

If you had Doc’s Delorean where and – more important – when would you travel to?

“I have no doubts here. Can I give two answers?”

Granted!

“I would like to go back to the past and get to know my parents when they were young. I would like to see how they used to live, the things they loved, the ideas they supported”.

And then?

“I would like to witness Jesus’ birth”.

You chose two destinations in the past. Aren’t you curious about the future?

“What I like about the future is than we do not know it. We need to shape it, discover it day by day. I would never want to know in advance what tomorrow will bring”.

You have owned a men’s clothing store for over 20 years. How is the business going?

“Very well! I only open the shop on demand, so to be able to commit fully to my customers. I offer them a careful selection of clothes, and I also provide advise if they want some. I love my job!”.

And we love her. We greet each other with the promise she will send us an autographed picture.

Ten days go by, and an envelope appears in the mailbox. It was sent from Universal Mail and Business Center in Studio City, Usa.

While I open it, I am very excited, well knowing what is inside. The letter that Marty Mc Fly sent to Doc in 1955 to warn him of the attack against him by Libyan terrorists 30 years later came to my mind. Then I am back to the present, that could also be the past, or the future. And a smile shines on my face.
